You can train your Maltese not to lick…..

I wanted to clear up some misconceptions about the licking issues.

Maltese are very trainable and are people pleasers. Tinker becomes sad very quickly if I even look at her like I am mad. She try’s very hard to please but sometimes she can’t help her self, like running off if she’s not on the lease.  That’s what 2 acres is for I guess but I can never get her back because she runs and runs and runs!  And well I guess it does give me exercise that I need but don’t really want, errrr.

Anyway, we “choose” to let Tinker continue to lick us.  I have allergies and can’t touch my eyes after loving on Tinker so I simply wash them before touching my eyes but otherwise her licking doesn’t bother me.

Daddy also gets a daily good morning lick while she sits on his chest. 

She licks him all over his face while laying flat on his chest then sits up to get her reciprocal scratch while still licking daddy.  She’s not selfish though, she always licks first then asks for her scratching, well more like demands it.  It is a morning ritual and if daddy takes a nap mid day, well it’s morning again.

And momma gets licks all day long, after playing, eating, snacking, watching TV, while snoozing off on my lap.  You name it I get a loving lick for it.  I think this is her way of saying “thank you” or “I love you” or whatever.  So we let this part of her personality shine and do not have the heart to take it away from her.  There are family and friends who don’t like the licking so we tell them to tell her no and possibly push her away lightly if they don’t like it.

Anyway, don’t decide NOT to get a Maltese because of the licking.  If it bothers you simply train with patience and they will learn.  Tinker knows she is not allowed to lick mommy’s face although she gets really really close and eyeballs me like man I really just wanna lick you but she doesn’t, she is allowed to lick me everywhere but the face as I never want to become allergic to her
