Tip of the Day:  Want a delicious dressing everyone will love?

Oh man this one blew me out of the water.  I am a picky salad dressing eater and always go for the creamy ones.  But my mother-in-law has changed that.  She made a homemade poppy seed dressing that smelled a little funny to me, meaning it smelled vinegary to me.  I don’t like vinegar!

However, after adding a dabble onto my salad I am hooked.  Turns out so is my sister-in-law who called for the recipe also, because her and her hubby loved it too.  So I made it tonight and woo hoo, hubby loved it and so did my mother and daugter said it was “okay” which meant she didn’t hate it but it wasn’t her favorite.

Now funny thing is, after I had the dressing at MIL’s house I then went out to dinner with my father and got poppy seed dressing there too and was disappointed it was very different and very creamy, not bad, but not like MIL’s ,which I like better.  So I rushed to grocery store to buy some and yuck another disappointment.  So the verdict is I will only make my own from now on, so here you go!

  1. 1 1/2 cup sugar
  2. 2 cups oil
  3. 2/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  4. 2 tsp salt or a teeny less but not much
  5. 3 Tbsp fresh onion juice (I severely minced my onion with a teeny bit of water to get this juice)
  6. 2 tsp dry mustard
  7. 3 Tbsp poppy seed.

Dump all ingredients together and blend until blended.  I blended just long enough for it to get a little thick.  Nothing fancy here!  Chill and eat……

Now because I have a triglyceride issue I will make the next batch with less sugar (taste testing each time I do to make sure I still love it)  It is quite sweet so with less sugar it should still be awesome, don’t know but loved it so much gonna eat all this up and make some more.

So what was my snack tonight at 9pm?  Yep, you guessed it, I had a big bowl of salad with a little poppy seed dressing Mmmmmm.

Yeah, onion juice I think I can do without that, it sounds like it is better to make like was described above. How often would you use it anyway? I have never even heard of it.

Grace, we live out in the boonies, aka cow country in Missouri, and I was happy to find Poppy Seed at the local grocery store. I bought the “best choice” 1 oz little red container. There is enough in the 1 oz container to make the full 3 cup recipe. I found it in the seasoning section under “P” and there was only 2 left so I bought them both :)

Let me know if you find some, you will really like this stuff and heck ole’ wally world should carry it as well, and our wally world’s are 30-45 minutes away in all directions.

Tootles!

I loved it thanks for the recipe.

I’d love to try this dressing. I love salads. But I don’t know where I can get the poppy seed, hehe…. All the other ingredients are available here except for the poppy seed I guess.
Thanks for that recipe.

Oh Myles I was the same way, Ranch all the way and it was my dressing of choice 99% of the time. I don’t like mustard at all, not even honey mustard, but I cannot taste it at all so don’t really know the point of using it but if I didn’t it may have not tasted so good :)

Try 1/2 or 1/3 of the recipe and tell me what you think? It is very sweet so keep that it mind, if you don’t like sweet you won’t like it. Like my original post said I will put a little less sugar for me for health reasons :)

Thanks for stopping by, you have a great weekend too.

Well since it has no dairy in it and it does have vinegar I would think the shelf life in the fridge would be pretty good. But I must say it won’t last that long around here. But for others who are concerned I would split the recipe in half or 1/3′s as it makes 3 cups and that’s a lot considering you don’t need much.

Can’t answer your question exactly as I am no scientist that’s for sure :) But I am glad you asked because maybe someone else may actually know. Have a great weekend.

I like lots of ranch on my salads mostly. I’m not that picky about dressings but I don’t like mustard. Although I do like honey mustard if it barely has any mustard taste to it (probably because of the sweetness). Can you taste any mustard in your mix?

That looks great! How long do you think it will last in the fridge?

That looks so delicious, I’ll try today.

The Fly December 16, 2009 at 10:50 pm

Well Charlotte I have used it every day except today since I made it and I simply ran out of salad stuff :) Hubby has been enjoying it every day taking it to lunch too. It is my favorite now so guess hubby will have to eat the other 6 bottles of store bought dressing or they will go in the trash when they expire hee hee. Thanks for stopping by.

The Fly December 16, 2009 at 10:39 pm

It is and I at salad for 3 days and have to go buy more salad stuff so I can make some more. It only takes a dab….

Ahhhh haaaaaa, I had to laugh because you know what? I have no idea!!!! It may be with all the lemon juice stuff or baking stuff or seasonings that is my guess. I had all the ingredients at home but onion juice, which my mother-in-law didn’t have either, so we made minced onion juice (added a little water to the mixture and voila we had juice and it worked fine). I will be at the grocery store tomorrow and will look and see if I can find it for us :)

I am happy to go looking like an idiot at the store because well I am one, most of the time hee hee.

I made the nurse burst out laughing at the doctors office yesterday because when she cruised across my forehead with the thermometer my eyes followed and I made a cheesy grin and she burst out in a loud laugh and told me I was just too funny and I made her laugh. Then the Dr. teased me about weighing in with my coat, hat and cloves on and he said he was surprised I didn’t jump up with my purse in my hands because he heard I was a cheater!!

The whole damned office was laughing at me, yeah yeah yeah :)

Staci at Just Bloggled December 15, 2009 at 12:23 am

Okay, don’t laugh because I mean this question in all seriousness, but where in the grocery store do you find onion juice? Can you get it in a bottle like in the salad dressing aisle, or do you have to do something funky?

Don’t laugh. I’m serious. I don’t cook (mixing ingredients counts as cooking my book), but the dressing sounded good. I don’t want to wander around Kroger looking like an absolute idiot because I don’t know whether to squeeze the onion.
