Getting ready for the big one!

June 5, 2010

in Fun, Gabby & Personal,In The News

Depending on where you live the “Big One” could be a Tornado, Flood, Hurricane or a combination of any one of these.

I used to always keep a safety box with a few items in it.  But that was because of where we lived.  We didn’t exactly live in an area prone to disasters but it was the Flood of 1993 changed my mind and it was at that time I kept supplies on hand.  1993 Midwest Flood

However, I am again in an area that “feels” safe but technically isn’t as it’s prone to tornado’s.  I am still in the Midwest, North of Kansas City MO, and we get a lot of hail storms and tornado watches and warnings.  So I again am thinking I need a safety box with food and batteries and such.

I stumbled upon 2 sites that have lots of great food items that I am using for my safety box.  I found them because I was looking for a powdered cheddar cheese.  And I must say I am really pleased with the taste and ease of use for my powdered cheese.  I will now have to buy more for our safety box.

Another great use that has me thinking more about freeze dried, dehydrated or powdered foods is our love of camping and how expensive it gets buying these food items in little rinky dink towns.  We also have the problem of bringing perishables home and then having to unload and put in our home to consume them before they expire or get too hot in the camper.

And lastly we live out in the country and get oodles of snow and ice and there are times I cannot get out to get any groceries.  So a 3rd use for me is to stock my home with regular food items during the winter months.

So check them out and see if you can find some great uses for these items.  I do suggest you start out by buying only a few items and trying them to make sure you like the quality and they fit your needs, then stock up.  Don’t want to waste food if we can help it.

Yeah that is how it seems. However, we where lucky enough to not personally have been affected by the flood of 2003 but it was VERY close to home and we where able to drive through and experience the destruction ourselves which helps you to understand more deeply the effects it has on people. It was an eye opener.

This is a very good idea, but I guess that you need to go through tough times before thinking of such a helpful thing.

Yep and with the number of natural disasters increasing it seems everyone should at least make a mini kit if not a several day one. I will simply rotate the food out every so often as well as the batteries and keep the rest their in case.

Absolutely right that we should always get ready for a “Big One”. It depends on our location that what we can face, a Tornado, Flood, Hurricane or a combination of any one of these. Thanks for updating.
