Memories of a special friend

Post image for Memories of a special friend

UPDATE:  I am happy to announce Tiff won the photo contest with her pic of Toots, the elderly lady she cared for.  Tiff will be sending a beautiful gift to Linda, Toots daughter, in memory of Toots.  She stays in contact with the family and has even invited this wonderful family to her wedding.  We are so proud of our young daughter……..

It is my hope that every single person in life will have fond memories of an elder.  Whether related or not, elderly people can have quite an effect on a person in that a special bond is formed of both love and respect.

My daughter had met 2 such a people and cared for them both as she would her own parents.  Tiff met this lovely family searching for a job while attending college.  She became a caregiver for the elderly couple and became close to both Toots and her dear husband as well as Toots daughter Linda and her family.

This all came about at a time when Tiff was herself experiencing some new things in her own life.  My husband and I had to relocate to another state for employment while Tiff had to stay behind for her college of choice and live on her own for the first time in an apartment.  So this family came into Tiff’s life when she needed them most and they needed her.  They provided love, support and friendship and when it was time for Tiff to leave this job due to moving colleges she stayed in close contact with this family.

The passing of both Toots, just last week, and her husband within the last year was very sad for our daughter but she feels blessed to have been a part of their lives.

And with her Tiff has gotten to take pieces of the memories in photographs.  One of the most beautiful pictures that touches my heart is of Toots holding Tiff’s hand, as she frequently did, while telling her stories and asking about her life.

I only met Toots once but she honored me with the same loving touch that brought warmth to my heart when I met this sweet little woman.  Her hands were so soft and gentle as she wrapped both of her hands around mine.  She didn’t let go while speaking with me breifly, she just softly caressed my hands in hers.  That’s when I understood how Tiff could love her so much.  She was kind and gentle with soft eyes and just pleased as punch to be talking with you.

It is my pleasure to help share the memory of Toots and her wonderful family with this photo below.

Tiff and Toots

Your help is needed.

Tiff has entered this photo in a contest online and would like your support.  Here is a little bit of info from Tiff herself:

“I entered a picture I took three years ago of the woman I used to take care of, we called her Toots. In the pic, she’s holding my hand (not posed). The time I spent with her and her family was one of the most special times in my life. Last weekend, Toots passed away. I’d love to win the contest so that I could share it with her daughter Linda to show her how much her mother touched the lives of those around her. “

Thank you so much. Tiff is very kind and loving and old people love her too :)

Yes, we do have a lot in common. Tiff is 23 and will be graduating in May then getting married on 10-10-10. Her and her fiancee will be staying with us for a few months so they don't have to sign another year lease on their apartment as she's looking for a full time job (for after graduation) in other areas than where they live. So that will be fun :)

Glad your daughter has a sense of humor about the college living close thing. Some kids get upset about that.

Mmmmm, I may have to go thaw out a hot dog now, thanks for the idea for dinner.

Ah, this was a wonderful post. Congratulations to your daughter! That photo captures the essence of friendship and aging. I've had many elderly people touch my life. I use to run errands and cook for a lady down the street, not because she asked, because I wanted her to feel important. I use to take a hot dog occasionally to another woman. When I trimmed her roses she said her favorite dinner from Meals On Wheels was a hot dog and I remembered. I raised my children in a neighborhood with mostly elderly and retirees so many of them were like parents and grandparents to me. I know what it's like to be touched by someone who is aging. I've always got a story! You and I have a lot in common. How old is Tiff now? My daughter is in college, she just turned 21. We actually relocated and she started at the University close by. She tells her friends, “Yeah, I went off to college and my parents went with me.” lol

Thank you Stacie. Yes, the photo does have good memories for her and myself. My daughter has grown so much in the last 5 years, it's exciting to watch as a mother :)
